Where the debut Sunrise from 2023 was largely the brainchild of producer and drummer Timothy van der Holst, the band has since evolved into a close-knit and creative unit, partly thanks to a series of live performances. The One consists of three English and three Dutch musicians, creating a unique blend of influences and styles. All band members contributed to the writing and composing process of this new album, resulting in a noticeably more diverse and layered sound.
Musically, Lighter than Air represents a clear step forward. While the debut heavily leaned on the legacy of 1970s prog rock — with influences from giants like Genesis, Yes, and King Crimson — the follow-up album has a more modern and contemporary sound, reminiscent of Marillion's Clutching at Straws era. Nevertheless, the roots in the prog tradition remain clearly audible: epic compositions, adventurous rhythms, and virtuosic instrumental passages continue to define the band's sound.
In addition to the familiar rock instrumentation, The One also makes use of analog synthesizers, lap steel guitar, double bass, and flute. These elements add depth and an unexpected richness to the music. With Lighter than Air, The One presents itself as a mature band with a strong and distinct identity. Construction Records, known for its keen ear for high-quality talent, once again provides a platform for ambitious voices within the progressive music scene.
